Eco-Settlements of Southern Europe is a research project that began with mapping initiatives in Spain and Portugal. The initial aim is to explore the field of environmentally friendly communities, typologies of eco-conscious cooperation, and diverse approaches to community cohesion.
The research investigates a wide spectrum of co-living models: from family-run biodynamic farms in remote mountain areas to cooperative developments united by religion or ideology; from zero-energy, nature-friendly condominium construction projects to the rehabilitation of abandoned villages by groups of like-minded people.
The project covers initiatives ranging from social escapism to startup ventures, from tech-savvy agricultural rehabilitation projects with a solid scientific background to vibrant art residencies.
The database includes a short description, key information, a motto, and an active link for each settlement, where more detailed material can be found. Settlements are categorized by active and closed status.
The project is ongoing, and we continue to search for new discoveries.
