Energy Efficiency of Buildings in Catalonia is a spatial analysis project examining the current state of building energy performance in the context of upcoming European Union regulations.
Under EU climate policy, Spain must ensure that all buildings offered for sale or rent achieve at least an energy label E by 2030 and label D by 2033. Long-term objectives further require the national building stock to transition toward A–B ratings—near-zero or zero-emission buildings—by 2050.
This project focuses on four medium-sized municipalities in Catalonia, where all buildings are mapped and classified according to their official energy efficiency ratings.
The analysis reveals a strong dominance of G and F labels, which together account for approximately 75% of the existing building stock, highlighting the scale of renovation required to meet forthcoming regulatory targets.
